We recommend following these guidelines when positioning and using boat stands to store your vessel safely ashore.
- 1
Place a set (pair) of stands every 8–10 feet along the hull, starting from the stern of the boat.
- 2
Ensure the stands are positioned on flat ground across the feet. Place them as wide apart as possible whilst still providing support and downward pressure.
- 3
A minimum of 2 stands per side of the boat are needed to ensure safety and redundancy. If there is a lot of bow protruding forwards of the stands, consider adding a bow support to stop any rocking forwards.
- 4
Ensure the stands are the correct size for the boat. Do not overextend the stands — there should be around 8" or more of thread left inside the lower tube.
- 5
Position the stands so that the heads are as close as possible to perpendicular (90°) to the threaded rod. This ensures the head of the stand can grip more against the hull.
- 6
Boat stands are not usually designed to take the full weight of the boat. Instead, suitable supports (e.g. timber blocks, adjustable keel stands) should be placed along the centre keel line to take the majority of the boat's weight. Or contact us for weight-supporting options.
- 7
These should be placed under strong areas / bulkhead areas. If the boat is outside, try to tilt it slightly to the rear or to a (rain) water drainage area.
- 8
Always watch out for hull distortion / deflection when winding up.
- 9
Ensure the boat is level left-to-right.
- 10
Chain or strap the stands together from left to right for added security.
- 11
Give the stands a pull / push once in position and tightened up. If you can move it — it's too loose. Do not rely solely on connecting straps / chains to hold the stands in position.
- 12
Be aware it is very easy to start lifting a boat off the keel supports / blocks by overwinding the boat stands — especially on smaller boats. Tap the blocks with a hammer or similar — if they are under load you will hear a thud rather than a tap.
- 13
Watch for trapped fingers and limbs, and sharp edges.
- 14
Check your stands on a regular basis for tightness and security.
- 15
Check the condition and integrity of your stands before and after use. Stands should be checked and maintained regularly and as appropriate.
- 16
Avoid tying anything to the stands such as covers and pets (!)
- 17
Our stands are designed solely for the use of supporting boats when ashore unless the product description says otherwise.
